Cadden Classic Scholarship
Covid-19 has had a tremendous impact on all of us. Our businesses, schools, playgrounds, and communities have all been hit hard and our lives drastically changed. Unfortunately, for the Cadden family, it has been all too personal. Spencer Cadden’s grandfather passed in June, his wife passed in April of 2021 and his mother passed away from the disease on December 18, 2020. It has been a year of tragedy and great personal loss for the Cadden family.
Because the Cadden family is so deeply intrenched in this community, they decided to start a scholarship foundation that will support a graduating Iroquois senior. To fund this scholarship program, we have partnered with the Iroquois Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, and created the Cadden Classic Memorial Golf Tournament.

Take Down Cystic Fibrosis
Take Down CF came at the suggestion of Brian Zeiser of Bauer Specialty Commercial Services who has a connection to the event as his boys wrestle in the General McLane school district under the guidance of high school head coach Ryan Cook. Ryan’s daughter Charlee suffers from this progressive genetic disease which causes damage to the lungs, digestive system and other organs. Cystic Fibrosis is a rough disease which affects secretory glands causing mucus to become thick and sticky. It builds up in your lungs and blocks your airways and makes it easy for bacteria to grow leading to serious lung infections that can cause severe damage to the organs. There have been great strides in research, visit https://www.cff.org/ to learn more about treatment breakthroughs. Coach Cook shared that this match started out as a means to raise awareness and provide the team with a lesson about kindness and generosity. We are glad to have been able to contribute to the cause of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The DefIANt Scholars Program is initiated by Ian Malesiewski. Ian is a North East native and athlete who sustained a spinal cord injury in 2016 and is now a quadriplegic. Matt Bauer interviewed Ian to learn how he not only fought to survive the injury but now thrive. That same defiant spirit and work ethic that defined him as an elite football player and wrestler transitioned him from a hospital bed to graduating from Cathedral Prep in the top of his class and going on to the University of Miami, with his sites set on law school and a career advocating for disability rights. You’ll also learn what #BeADog is all about.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial
Dave Gehrlein of BPM Housing brought the Erie County Vietnam Veterans Memorial forth because of his father, Gregory, who served in Vietnam and also contributed to the construction of the Memorial on the hill west of Veterans Stadium on State Street.
Ken Kensill chairman of Chapter 435 Vietnam Veterans of America who initiated the Memorial said, “Thank God we got it up before we all passed away. We are all getting older. There are a lot of us who are not healed yet from Vietnam. We hope this wall will bring healing. It is a place of peace for people to go.” Chapter 435 does many things in the continued support of all veterans to get the help they need upon returning to civilian life.
We’re thankful to all our veterans and glad to have been able to contribute to the maintenance and upkeep of this memorial.
Girl Scouts
his 4002 & You Kids donation is from Alyson Dana of BNB Financial who was co-leader for her daughter’s second grade Girl Scout Troop. Here’s her story about their Troop and what the donation means to them.
This is most of our girls’ second year as a Girl Scout. We have been blessed with an amazing group of girls. Most of the money we raise is from Girl Scout cookie season sales. We have used the money to go on camping trips and an amazing overnight adventure to The Niagara Falls Aquarium. Some of the money is given back to our community. At Christmas, the girls put together care packages and made cards for our local Mercy Center for Women. Some of the girls got to personally give the gifts to women and children who reside there. It was an amazing experience to share with them. Our troop also donated time to our local food bank. We try to keep the girls involved in as much as we can!
Each year selling the Girl Scout Cookies there’s an option to pick who donated cookies go to. This is the first time we had our girls involved in a vote. They chose the Shriners Hospital for Children. I heard many of them talking and it sounded like the decision was because they wanted the cookies to go to kids like them. I’m very proud of our girls and pleased to be a part of this great organization.
Please encourage kids around you to get involved with activities that keep them learning, active and exposed to new things!

Cowabunga Day
Cowabunga Day Run/Benefit is in memory of Jax Stone. This event honors the memory of a brave child who lost his battle with DIPG (brainstem glioma) on July 27, 2014 at the age of nine.
Jax was diagnosed with DIPG on September 12, 2013. He loved the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and that’s how Missy Rininger from Bauer Specialty and Gutter Solutions of Lake Erie came up with the name Cowagunga Day. Missy has continued to hold the benefit in Jax’s memory and to support three charities who helped Jax and his family, the Children’s Hospital of UPMC, Make-A-Wish and Give Kids The World Village.
DIPG is an especially devastating form of brain tumor because there is no effective treatment and no chance of survival. The median survival time is 9 months from diagnosis. Jax made it to 10.5 months.
