This month 4002 & You is donating to Foster Erie in support of their annual Placement Bag Drive and bringing awareness to the needs of foster kids in Erie County. Matt Bauer sat down with Jessica Peterson and Alyssa Fox to learn more about Foster Erie and fostering in general. Check out the extended conversation below for more insights as a continuation of the video we shared on Facebook. They discuss what goes on for kids in foster care as well as their own starts with fostering.
Movie = Reality?
In a different conversation we asked Jessica and Alyssa about a recent movie titled ‘Instant Family’ if it compares to reality. How accurately does Instant Family depict the world of fostering and the emotions that kids and families experience? A bit to our surprise they said it actually does capture it quite well. Foster Erie actually had a viewing of the movie earlier this year as part of National Foster Care Awareness Month at an event to share information for people interested in learning more about fostering and helping children. They have events like this throughout the year to get people thinking about foster care because the need is always present. Unfortunately there are children and families facing tough situations all the time and the foster care support system helps fill the gap with the main goal of reunification.
I’d Love to Help but I can’t be a Foster Parent
If you have a heart to help kids there are many ways to do so within the foster community without becoming a foster family. Jessica and Alyssa told us there are ways to help with the Family Carnival or the Placement Bag Drive. The Bag Drive directly fills a need providing a bag to these children who are suddenly removed from a situation without having had time to pack up anything. As things are being processed to get them to a safe foster home or other care shelter when no family is available these bags provide a place to keep their belongings instead of a plastic garbage bag. Learn more about helping with the bag drive by contacting them at their Facebook page @FosterErie.
Jessica and Alyssa also told of some great ways that people can help support foster families with simple things like:
- Preparing a meal for them
- Provide respite time to give the parents a break for an evening
- Invite them over to your house
A Simple Bag Can Help A Lot of People
They shared the story with us of how one of the bags Alyssa helped provide with the inaugural bag drive was given to a child put into Jessica’s family’s care before the two ladies even knew each other. The child was put in their care late at night which saved Jessica from having to go out to the store in the middle of the night to get basic things like pajamas or toothbrush. One bag can help the child as well as the foster care family as the transition happens.
It was great to learn more about fostering and how this donation will be put to great use to make a difference for children and families. Thanks goes out to Cheri Lynn from the Bauer Specialty and LeafGuard staff for her suggestion.
