What is it & should it be insulated?
When a building uses heating or cooling equipment to control the temperature and/or humidity it is considered a conditioned space. Unconditioned space is just the opposite and could be an entire building, such as a barn or warehouse, or any part of a building that is not actively controlled, such as a garage or porch.
Insulation can impact the energy usage by controlling the heat gain or loss. It makes perfect sense this will decrease costs to maintain desired conditions inside the building. But would insulating an unconditioned space be beneficial?
For unconditioned spaces such as storage facilities or workshop areas, would insulation benefit these types of structures? Yes, and it all comes down to a single word:
Comfort is the main reason other than energy cost savings when considering spray foam for an unconditioned building. The occupants of the space will be more comfortable in an insulated unconditioned space as it helps reduce heat gain or loss.
Consider a summer day when the temperature is in the 90s. The roof of a structure can easily approach 150 degrees. Heated roof materials will begin to radiate energy into the space below which will rise well above ambient temperatures and add to the discomfort of animals or workers in the building.
Higher temps typically affect occupants in negative ways causing less production and lower efficiency. This applies to workers as well as livestock.
Spray foam insulation under a roof deck creates a radiant break by changing the temperature of the roof materials on the interior. The surface of the foam exposed to the inside will be lower than the 150 degree roof deck and closer to the ambient temperature. Over the course of the day, much less radiant energy is transferred to the interior which keeps things more comfortable.
And we all know happy chickens and cows make happier eggs and milk!
